Mixed-reality has industry in a spin!

Imagine a world where, courtesy of a mixed-reality headset and state-of-the-art-software, you could be transported into the heart of a 3D building model and be able to experience it just as you would if you were standing within the physical environment post-completion.

Thanks to an award-winning collaboration between Trimble and Microsoft, this is exactly what visitors to The Architecture & Design Film Festival, in New York on October 14th 2015, will be able to sample in the event’s first ever Virtual Reality Lounge.

Described as a revolution in the way the AEC industry uses technology, Trimble and Microsoft HoloLens uses overlaid holograms to give all those involved in the planning, construction and lifestyle management of a structure a vivid picture of their project contributions within a real-world context.

The integration of HoloLens with Trimble's SketchUp 3D modelling software and the Trimble Connect collaboration platform enables users to quickly and effectively analyse various ‘what if’ design scenarios and using Trimble Connect with HoloLens holographic technology enables remote teams to effectively review and collaborate in order to resolve constructability issues in real time. 

In June, Trimble and Microsoft HoloLens won a Realcomm Digie award for Technology Innovation and reviewers have been extremely positive about the detail, clarity and scope it offers in an industry where, through BIM, collaboration is increasingly key.

With two HoloLens headsets set to be delivered to astronauts aboard the International Space Station by December, it’s safe to say the hardware is out of this world. However, for those working in construction, it’s the addition of Trimble software, such as Sketchup 3D, that makes Trimble and Microsoft HoloLens so powerful among the next generation of construction industry tools.
